Sometimes I get bit by dogs~8/26/13

So the other night I went running. 8/26/13
It was about 7:20pm. Kirk was home and I had put Alice to bed.
Nothing too out of the ordinary but this time I decided to run south on Main street instead of north. I NEVER go south but I thought it would be nice for a change.
Everything was fine and I was feeling good.
As I was running down the highway I had the thought that I should have brought my pepper spray. Kirk bought it for me awhile ago but I never take it with me. I hate carrying anything while I run and I always forget about it. But this night changed my mind.
About 30 seconds after I had that thought a pit bull came across the road at me.
I did all the normal stuff to get the dog to go away.
I kicked at it.
Told it to 'get'.
Turned around to face it. For intimidation, I guess.
Nothing worked.
While I was trying all my tricks a second and bigger pit bull came.
At this point I was getting pretty nervous. These dogs were not afraid of me at all.
They both started going at me.
Jumping, growling, snapping.
I was kicking and kicking but since I cannot fly it was hard to kick both of them at the same time.
I started yelling for help because there were people in the front yard where the dogs had come from.
They did nothing.
The dogs kept jumping at me and finally knocked me over.
They were both on top of me.
It was terrifying.
Then the big one bit me on the calf.
I must have pulled away when he did because it tore my leg up pretty badly.
The interesting thing about this was that I didn't feel any pain when the dog actually bit. I knew it's jaws were around my calf and could feel it but it didn't hurt. Thank you adrenaline.
The worst part was that throughout the whole ordeal I kept thinking it would never end. I didn't fear for my life or anything like that I just thought it would never end. It was a very scary thing.
Finally the owner's daughters called the dogs off. (The owner was mowing his lawn THE ENTIRE TIME!)
They ran back to the girls and I limped off.
By this time I was sobbing and in tons of pain.
I tried to wave down a few cars for a ride but they just drove past.
Then I waved down a truck and they past me too.
I was so defeated at this point.
Then the dogs started coming back at me. Luckily the girls stopped them this time.
When I turned around to prepare myself for their second attack I noticed that the truck was turning around. I cannot express how happy I was.
I could barely talk over the sobbing but I finally told them I had been bit by a dog and needed a ride home. They wanted to take me to the hospital but I asked them to take me home so Kirk could take me. These strangers will never know how heroic that ride home was for me.
I limped up to the front door and yelled for Kirk. He came running around the corner in the house and I told him I was bit by a dog. I didn't want to go inside since Heidi was still awake and I didn't want her to see the blood running down my leg.
Kirk's first reaction was 'where are the dogs?'. I told him it didn't matter and I needed to get to the hospital.
At this moment my neighbor appeared from nowhere and said she had the girls and we needed to just go. I tear up even now as I write this and think about the tender moments the Lord sent our way through this whole thing.
We went to the hospital and waited for a very long time but finally the doctor came and said I needed stitches. Kirk also called the cops and one came to take my statement.
The shots to numb me were THE WORST PART!
Then I had to get 10 stitches. 2 deep and 8 on the surface.
The cop came back while they were doing my stitches and said he found the dogs and their owner and cited him.
Luckily the dog had all his shots up to date. Another tender mercy.
We finally went home about 2.5 hours later.
Katy Nebecker, our neighbor. had put Heidi to bed and all was well.
Then our other neighbor, Brian Goodwine, came by just to make sure I was okay.
They heard I was bit and were all very concerned.
They also brought us dinner the next day so I wouldn't have to cook.
The Lord has blessed us with some amazing people in our life.
The wound is healing fine. I had to limp around for the first few days but that got better.
I had anxiety the first week or so when I would try to go to sleep. I just kept replaying the whole thing over and over. That has subsided as well.
I started running again after three weeks.
It hurt but nothing too terrible.
The worst part then was the paranoia throughout the whole run.
I always carry my pepper spray now but every noise or bark or movement makes me jump.
Hopefully that doesn't last forever.

The judge has since ordered the dogs exterminated or at least never seen again in town.
It isn't exactly the best result but at least they won't be here anymore. I hate to think this could happen to someone else.
They will also pay our medical bills.
I feel sorry for the guy because I don't think he can afford it but I guess that's the price for keeping vicious dogs.
